What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization, Explained

AI answers are the new front page. GEO is the discipline of becoming the source they cite — here is how it works, why it is different from SEO, and where to start.

What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization, Explained

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's AI Mode a commercial question — "best CRM for a small agency", "how to warm up a cold email domain" — and you get an answer, not ten blue links. The answer names a handful of sources. If your site is one of them, you exist. If it isn't, you don't.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of becoming one of those named sources. Not ranking #1 — being cited.

Why GEO is not just "SEO for AI"

Classic SEO optimizes a page to win a ranked slot on a results page. GEO optimizes your presence across the web so that when an AI engine assembles an answer, your brand is part of the material it reasons from.

That difference changes the work:

  • The unit of competition is the mention, not the page. An AI engine can cite you because a listicle on another site includes you, because a review site describes you accurately, or because your documentation explains a concept cleanly. Much of GEO happens on pages you don't own.
  • Coverage beats position. Being present in eight of the twenty sources an engine consults beats being the #1 result on one of them.
  • Answers are winner-take-most. A generated answer names three to six sources. There is no page two.

We dig into the mechanics of source selection in How AI Engines Pick Their Sources — the short version is that engines lean heavily on pages that already aggregate and compare: roundups, listicles, review sites, comparison posts.

The GEO flywheel

The practical loop looks like this:

  1. Discover where your market is already being answered. Which prompts mention your category? Which sources do the engines cite for them? This is your target map.
  2. Find the gaps. The listicles, reviews, and roundups that get cited but don't include you — every one is a winnable citation.
  3. Pitch your way in. Reach out to the authors and editors of those cited pages. Some inclusions are free (you genuinely fit the list), some are paid placements. Both count to the machine reading them.
  4. Compound. Every inclusion makes you part of the corpus AI engines reason from — and inclusion tends to beget inclusion, because aggregators read each other.

Steps 3 and 4 are classic outreach — the same muscle as backlink outreach, pointed at a new target. If you want the full operating manual, the AI citation outreach playbook walks through the entire loop end to end.

GEO vs SEO: do you have to choose?

No — they feed each other. Strong content earns links; links remain one of the signals engines weigh; and cited pages are very often pages that rank. But the priority is shifting. We wrote a full breakdown in AI Citations vs Backlinks, and the one-line summary is: backlinks move an algorithm, citations move a buyer reading an answer.

What to measure

GEO measurement is younger than rank tracking, but the essentials are already clear:

  • Citation share — for the prompts that matter to you, how often do you appear in the answer's sources?
  • Coverage map — which frequently-cited pages in your category include you, and which don't yet?
  • Movement — inclusions won per month, and which outreach produced them.

You don't need a heavy toolchain for this; see the minimal GEO stack for what actually earns its keep.

Where Pitchref fits

Pitchref exists because step 3 — the outreach — is the grind. Discovering the cited pages, extracting the right contacts, writing pitches that get answered, following up, and negotiating inclusions is repetitive, high-volume work with real judgment sprinkled through it. That's exactly the shape of work an agent is good at: the agent does the heavy lifting, you make the calls that matter. It runs on your own Cloudflare account, sends from your own inboxes, and the citation-focused free tier is free forever.

GEO rewards the brands that start early: answers are being written right now, and the sources being cited today are earning the trust that keeps them cited tomorrow.
